A Soldier Love Story

The pen-pal friendship between a young boy and a homesick soldier blossoms into something much more meaningful in this warmhearted tale of family and courage. Sgt. Vince Carerra (Johnny Messner) is serving his country overseas when he starts a correspondence with Jared Marshall, a young boy still reeling from his parents’ recent divorce. Estranged from his father, Jared confides his pain in Vince in between colorful exchanges about baseball. Upon returning home, Vince meets Jared and his mother Dana (Lori Loughlin), and soon finds himself falling for the newly-single mother. Before long, the trio has formed a family. Their momentary bliss is soon shattered, however, when Vince discovers he’s about to be redeployed, and realizes his role as a father figure will soon take a backseat to his role as a soldier. Ever since the Detroit-bred duo the White Stripes rose to fame on the strength of their 2001 album WHITE BLOOD CELLS, they’ve tirelessly toured the world, and in 2007, when the group hit the road in support of the album ICKY THUMP, leader Jack White decided their previous tours had shortchanged the nation of Canada and they should do something about it. The White Stripes set up an ambitious Canadian tour that found them visiting every province and territory in the nation, and White and drummer and ex-spouse Meg White also set up a number of surprise appearances along the way, ranging from an impromptu acoustic show on a city bus to a few tunes at a community center for Innuit elders. Filmmaker Emmett Malloy followed the White Stripes as they made their way across Canada, and THE WHITE STRIPES: UNDER GREAT WHITE NORTHERN LIGHTS offers a look at the band on and off stage, with Jack dominating the conversation and Meg letting her drums do most of her talking. Dillinger Is Dead

This offbeat combination of reality and fantasy finds Glauco (Michel Piccoli) returning home from his job as an industrial engineer to find his wife (Anita Pallenberg) in bed with a headache. Deciding to fix dinner for himself, he reads from a gourmet cookbook as he watches television, or listens to the radio. He runs across an old .45 caliber handgun and he cleans the weapon between attending to his culinary creation. He later goes to bed, but rises when he is restless and goes to make love with the maid (Annie Girardot), after which he examines the newly painted revolver. After shooting his wife to death, he imagines he is driven to the ocean where he swims out to a boat bound for Tahiti and takes a job as a cook. The title is a reference to the notorious American gangster who could shoot his way out of any place but the police line in front of Chicago’s Biograph Theater. (90 hr.)

With this unusual, way-offbeat documentary, Joel Conroy offers an unique take on a familiar subject: the film examines the Irish origins of the west coast surfing culture. Conroy filters this history through the tragic life of George Freeth – an Irish transplant who turned early 20th century Hawaiian kings onto surfing, and thus resurrected a long-buried pastime that eventually spread to the masses. The film immediately delves into Freeth’s tale, then travels around the world charting his influences across numerous cultural boundaries – from Hawaii, to sunny Southern California, to the “mother country” of Ireland. The film culminates with the makers’ decision to take on-camera rides on colossal, 50-foot waves just off of the Irish coast. (80 hr.)
